Lake Conroe — Boating, Renaissance Festival, etc …
07.23.08 Posted in Greater Houston, Travel by A. GhodasaraIf you are new to Houston we suggest two great things to do at Lake Conroe, approximately 55 miles north of Houston on Route 45 North towards Dallas, TX
- Go Boating and/or Jet Skiing on Lake Conroe
- Texas Renaissance Festival (TRF)
Note: The festival only takes place for 8 weekends — from Oct till Nov / Sat-Sun only.
Boating and/or Jet Skiing on Lake Conroe
We always rent from the rental company Just For Fun - http://www.jff.net/houston/index.htm who we found more professional and have better boats/ski’s compared to other rental co.’s that we have used. They also have rental’s on Lake Travis in Austin. You must call and book before you leave. If they are booked you Google and find other rental companies. All rental companies typically charge apprx
- $75 an hour for a Ski boat which is fast and comfortable for only 6
people (max capacity is
but I don’t recommend if you have more.

- $70 an hour for pontoon boats which are relatively slow compared to
ski boats but they are spacious and great for party of 10
- $70 for a jet ski aka wave runner

We have tried all three but the Pontoon is the one that we like because it’s spacious and the speed is good enough for us.
All you are required is a car driver’s license to rent this machines. You should either call ahead of time if it’s a long weekend or call the same day or earlier day and book. Usually you are required to inform them the numbers of hours you want to rent.
Before you rent make sure you ask the following questions to the rental company:
- If Gas re-fill is free? Usually a full tank is included in the price
- How long will a full tank last? Usually they last at least 4-5 hours
- Will they give a rain check or credit in an event it rains when you reach the marina or you decide to leave earlier then the hours that you have booked?
If you are renting a ski boat — I also recommend renting a tube and tying it behind the boat. It’s fun for kids and adults. Tubing, skiing, etc .. are quite popular at Lake Conroe and so is swimming.

And if you don’t swim the safety jackets will do perfect job. Btw, every boat will come with a safety jacket but if you have a little kid, I recommend getting your their own safety jacket.
The following things we have not tried but have good reviews:
- Picnic and Barbeque at the small/nice public park on the lake (right off RT 1097)
- Rent a Party Barge (50 people capacity, $1040 for 8 hours, waterslids, BBQ pit, two levels, bathroom, banquet table). For more information visit Just For Fun’s website (http://www.jff.net/houston/p_boats.htm)

Above all Lake Conroe is a great place if you want to avoid driving all the way to Lake Travis for lake excersions.
Texas Renaissance Festival (from oct to nov – sat/sun only) near Lake Conroe
The TRF is a must visit festival every year. It is one of the nations largest and most acclaimed renaissance theme parks where the sights, sounds, tastes, and beauty of the 16th century come alive every saturday and sunday for 8 weekends — Oct through Nov, 9:00 AM till dusk. Visit http://www.texrenfest.com/ for more information.
Everyweekend is a different theme, for example: Halloween, Pirate, Roman, Barbarian, and Christmas. Our fav is the Roman theme.
